Local Doctors Start New Center to Fight Malnutrition

DR Congo is bursting with life. Its rich forests are filled with fruits and roots that people have eaten for centuries. The country has historically been a place of great agricultural production, home to a number of major plantations. PCP is honored to have supported many agriculture projects over the years and we are encouraged by the great work our Congolese partners are doing in this area.

Yet in some areas, malnutrition remains a major problem. Malnutrition is caused by insufficient or imbalanced consumption of nutrients, which causes susceptibility to disease and infection, stunted growth, chronic medical conditions, and even death. Children are the most vulnerable. This is true of the area around the Bogose Nubea hospital. For a long time, the hospital has been ill-equipped to do much about the malnutrition problem, until now.

Dr. Florent is the Bogose Nubea hospital’s director. He lives across town in a small house with his family. As a new-comer to Bogose Nubea, he has been especially troubled by the high rate of malnutrition in his community. Up to 40% of the children Dr. Florent treats are malnourished. Some require simple diet changes while other children, with severe malnutrition, need urgent medical intervention. Dr. Florent and his colleagues know that this problem will never be solved by simply finding better ways to treat malnourished kids. He wants to prevent it.
The new nutrition rehabilitation center at Bogose Nubea Hospital teaches mothers how to add nutritional value to what they feed their children.
Recently, Dr. Florent and his team developed a nutrition center, which tackles malnutrition from multiple angles. This center serves two overarching purposes:
  1. First, it enables the hospital to treat severely malnourished children with good local foods.
  2. Second, it teaches mothers to help their children avoid malnutrition altogether.

Many of you have asked about what the Covenant Kids Congo and Paul Carlson Partnership team experienced in Brussels after the terrorist bombings on March 22. We are deeply grateful for your prayers, and we are thankful to be safe. Today we’re sharing a little about that experience and what we took away from it. Read about our experience here.

The Congo Clinic Initiative funds are being used to bring clinics up to a higher level of care. Your support of the clinics are used to:
1. Fully stock medicines in all clinics.
2. Provides supplies for medical treatments and surgery.
3. Covers the cost to transport medical supplies and solar equipment.
4. Pays technicians wages to install or maintain solar panels.
5. Assess refrigeration needs by local engineers and determine which clinics will benefit.
6. Develop plans to meet the need for clean water.
7. Refurbish or rebuild clinics to improve the level of care.
8. Fund staff development meetings, enabling nurses and doctors to meet and analyze successes, learn from failures, and work together on improving the quality of care that they provide.
