When Healthcare Hurts was the topic and a seemingly oxymoronic phrase. How can healthcare ever be hurtful? Yet this was a key theme of the Global Missions Heath Conference recently attended by leaders of PCP's Medical Ambassador's Program. Over 3,000 Christian medical and health professions gathered in Louisville, KY to share their collective wisdom and raise their collective queries, united by their common calling to serve the under-resourced. Even in the world of saving lives, more “harm than help” can accompany our good intentions. The history of short- and long-term global health ministry is fraught with examples of well-meaning professionals unintentionally causing harm.Read more.
Global Missions Health Conference
The team had an inspiring time at the GMHC Conference in Louisville, KY. Here are a few of their takeaways:
Jim Walker: "Several statements I heard in the Educating Health Care Professionals talk reinforced the philosophy of PCP:
We should train people to train people.
Short term relationships are all about relationships.
The 3 most important goals of short term missions are to teach, to train a skill, and to go back."
Laurie Thorpe: "Florence Muindi's story and her organization had the most impact on me. That is a very thoughtful, careful way to bring about change from the inside of a community, and the ownership and accountability involved are a turn from what recent decades have seen in central Africa. I think that the more we can include some of those principles into the medical work in the Ubangi (northwest region of Congo), the more lasting the improvements can become."
