The Team Has Returned from Congo!

“Thank you very much because today the girl who came from Republic of Central Africa (Lidia) came to thank me because…formerly she had much shame in the presence of her friends.  Now her mouth has become beautiful and her family is filled with happiness and joy. They asked me “What can we give you?”  And I answered them that they should praise God and pray for the doctors who helped her, and that they should look for other children like her to send for care.”  - Pastor Bofio   Read Lidia's story here.

The PCP Medical Ambassadors team was able to surgically correct the cleft lips of 12 children, as they worked to train Congolese medical professionals on surgery and anesthesia. Team members were Drs. Kurt and Linda Lindquist, Dr. Bob DeMaster, Dr. Jerry Oliaro, Dr. Eric Gunnoe, and nurse Ann Hagensen.

The Lindquists wrote of the trip: The medical team we traveled with ministered in many ways including various surgeries, visits to the nursing school, assessment of transportation needs for the sick, a 5 day course in emergency trauma care to 25 nurses and doctors, as well as praying with families, showing The Nativity movie, and worshiping together with local believers. God blessed and we feel relationships were strengthened and practitioners were left with skills that will be helpful in their care of patients.

We will leave you with the story of little Bwazu, also as written by the Lindquists. This little boy, 15 months old is the child of a deacon in the church. When Bwazu was born with this deformity, the father was depressed and unable to eat. He lost hope and wondered if this was a trial from God or an evil spirit at work. Now he praises God that shame, mocking and ridicule will not be a part of his child’s life. Peace has returned to his heart.

Helping Mothers Survive - Update

Thank you for your generous response to our emergency request for funds for Misoprostol! Thanks to you, over $12,000 has come in, allowing us to purchase a six-month supply of this life-saving drug. The annual cost is $22,000, but that is less than $3 per woman treated!

Why Misoprostol?
In March, 2014, a PCP Medical Ambassador team taught the Helping Mothers Survive course to 12 Congolese health providers. Because of lack of refrigeration for Pitocin, the preferred drug to prevent postpartum bleeding, an appeal was made to the Medical Ambassadors to help fund Misoprostol, the other recommended medication. The training has spread and Congolese nurses and doctors are using Misoprostol when needed! When the Congo Clinic initiative provides refrigeration to the clinics, Pitocin (which is available in Congo) will be used. Until then, the Medical Ambassadors will seek continued funding for Misoprostol.

Your support means that Congolese nurses and doctors have access to this life-saving intervention. Thank you.
