Mbote Medical Ambassadors!
Happy Fourth of July! As we celebrate our Independence Day, and DR-Congo’s Independence Day (June 30th), we also have much to celebrate with the PCP Medical Ambassador program.
75 of the 108 CEUM clinics now have US-based sponsors through CCI. We have sent significant funding for medical supplies, medicines and operational support in response to applications from each of the health zones. We have chairs for 8 of our 10 focus groups. PCP is hiring its first-ever Director of Medical Development. We’ve just sent a 6 month supply of misoprostol and have raised enough to pay for the following 6 months. Many of you have worked hard to make these dreams a reality and we thank you.
Focus Groups
As you know, our approach is to position ourselves as learners, of the Congolese context, the realities there, the current practices, and what has been tried before. Each Focus Group is designed to facilitate a reciprocal relational process where the Ambassador may be enriched as a student of the Congolese culture and context and, in turn, contribute his or her God-given expertise. At this point, each of the ten Focus Groups is in different stages of development. As a way for all of us to begin, we recommend the following book list as an initial introduction. You are probably familiar with a few of these:
- Walking with the Poor, Bryant Myers
- When Helping Hurts, Fikkert and Corbett
- Congo: An Epic History of a People, David Van Reybrouck
- King Leopold's Ghost, Adam Hochschild
Director of Medical Development
This brand new position for PCP will oversee PCP’s medical work in Congo, including the coordination of the Medical Ambassadors. He or she will be a full-time staff member dedicated to providing vision and management to the comprehensive set of programs. If you know of a potential candidate with extensive cross-cultural and health-care experience, please pass on the job description, found here.
