Remembering Dr. Kurt Lindquist

We are very saddened to share with you the passing of Dr. Kurt Lindquist on June 15, 2019. Kurt was a PCP Medical Ambassador and former Congo missionary. We are so grateful for him and his passion to serve the people of Congo. Here are a few photos from 2015 when he traveled to Congo with the PCP Medical Ambassadors to teach Congolese doctors trauma care.

From Sheryl Noren: On Saturday, June 22 at 8:00 a.m., the Karawa Hospital staff is going to have a memorial service for Dr. Kurt in honor and memory of his life and past work. Those that studied under him, worked with him, and were his friend or friends of the family want to thank God for Kurt's life and love that he showed through his surgery skills and love for the Congolese. If you have a message that you would like to be shared, please email the PCP team and we will pass the message on to Sheryl Noren. Pray that this service will bring honor to God. May this service remind all attending that we too can touch the lives of those around us with our works, words, and love.

Peace be to his memory!

The official obituary is below:

After returning from Congo, Dr. Lindquist completed specialty training in vascular surgery at Providence Medical Center in Seattle in 1998. In the next 20 years, he tremendously enjoyed serving veterans and training surgical residents at the VA Medical Center in Fargo as a vascular surgeon.

Nursing Dorm Rehab Fully Funded!

In April, we shared about plans to rehabilitate a nursing dorm in Congo, a project initiated by Ann Hagensen, President of PCP Medical Ambassadors. At the time of writing, Ann's family, friends, and U.S. nursing students had raised $14,020.75--an impressive amount! But we could not have anticipated what would come next.

Right before the PCP team left for Congo, we received a call from someone who had just been wondering what to do with extra funds coming her way. When she read the April Medical Ambassador email about the nursing dorm project, she called PCP right away to donate the remaining $10,000! This special donor has a strong connection to Congo and knew former Congo missionary, Grace Nelson. It is our hope that we can honor Grace Nelson in some way when the nursing dorm is complete.

When we arrived in Congo, we made sure to tell Paul Noren all of the funds have been received for the project. He was thrilled, and that same week the materials arrived for the roof to be repaired.

Thank you for supporting nursing students in Congo!
Emergency Care Improves and Expands

Training is never sweeter than seeing one’s students training others. Such was the experience of the Medical Ambassador’s Emergency Focus Group members who traveled to Congo in late April.

Four years ago, Dr. Jerry Oliaro traveled to Congo and was approached by the hospital Medical Director at the time, Dr. Bosco, with a request for help to start an Emergency Department at Loko Hospital. Jerry agreed and during two subsequent trips with three different ED colleagues, they trained Dr. Bosco and his team. As a result, patient care has improved at Loko Hospital as the sickest patients are now seen quickly with a specific protocol.

Jerry's team (Karen Kerner RN and Sheryl Noren EMT) observed Dr. Bosco and Jacques (the nurse who is now in charge of the Loko Emergency Department) train the doctors and nurses at Karawa Hospital in the same methods with the added wisdom of personal experience. What a joy it is to witness Loko Hospital staff train their colleagues in Karawa!

Thank you to everyone who donated towards the PCP Medical Ambassadors to make the training sessions possible.
