Dear Faith Friends,

I bring the WARMEST words of appreciation to our FCC Prayer Shawl ministry from Susan B Anthony! Yes, it is my understanding that that is really her name!

Some of you were at the first “Crescendo” workshop that we hosted here at FCC back around Sept. 29, 2018. At that time, Kelly Casey (second from the left in the attached picture) from our Kalamazoo Covenant Church asked for prayer for a woman in his “Geezer Gears” bicycling club in K-zoo who had been hit by a car a day or two before and was seriously injured. Well, as you all know, if you say the word, “PRAYER” too loudly here at Faith, you’re going to get a Prayer Shawl thrown at you! 😊 Someone (can’t recall who...maybe MaryEllen) promptly went down and got a Prayer Shawl to send home with Kelly. Whether that same day or the next Sunday, a card was signed by MANY and sent to Susan.

So having learned of Kelly’s bicycling exploits, in planning this year’s Brothers Biking for Congo rides, I asked Kelly if he would be interested in participating and championing the cause for Rural Health Care in D.R. Congo among the K-zoo Covenant folks and beyond. So the attached photo op is from Saturday’s Team BBC Day 2 ride (June 1, 2019), 36+ miles on the Kalhaven trail from K-zoo to South Haven. Susan is pictured far left in the photo, Kelly next to her, yours truly in the middle.... Susan was effusive in her thanks and appreciation for all those who prayed for her and sent the Prayer Shawl! She was not only truly touched by the gesture, but indeed, God is healing her! So much so that she rode a fast-paced 26+ miles of the ride and is doing well!

So thanks to all who prayed for her and thanks to FCC Prayer Shawl ministry folks! Feel free to pass this along to any others who were there or are a part of Prayer Shawl team!

Renée Hale and her son Stephen Hale find their ministries converging in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Photo by Stephen Hale.

The team included a pediatrician, a nurse, and a physician’s assistant from the U.S., along with four Congolese medical professionals from Karawa. These seven would teach a group of 22 Congolese doctors and nurses two courses: “Helping Babies Breathe” and Essential Care for Every Baby.” The 22 could then go out and train many others.

On the taxiway at the Kinshasa International Airport, Renée said, “Stephen, at 15 we knew that God was beginning to work in your life towards mission aviation ministry, and now, here you are, and I’m sitting in the co-pilot seat with you. We’re actually seeing the kingdom work that God has called us to do meld together as our organizations are partnering in this ministry. It does feel surreal. It also feels like so much of a blessing, I can hardly contain it.”

Renée had flown with MAF in the DRC previously, but this was her first time to fly with her son there.

The team landed on the red-clay airstrip near Wasolo in the late afternoon. Wasolo was too far from home base to return that day, and Renée was scheduled to fly to another village in three days. So the airplane was parked until then, and Stephen was able to spend two days on the ground with his mother, getting to know the team and seeing their work firsthand.
