Ann Hagensen named President of PCP Medical Ambassadors
In the fall of 2018, the MST (Medical Steering Team) of the PCP Medical Ambassadors voted Ann Hagensen to serve as President of PCP Medical Ambassadors Program. Ann Hagensen, RN, BSN, FABC is a PCP Medical Ambassador, a member of the MST, and co-chairs the Nursing Focus Group. Ann commented, “I have volunteered with PCP for 6 years and have been on three teaching trips to Congo. I co-chair the Nursing Focus Group and am an active member of the MST. The MST partners with the Congolese medical leaders through emails and phone to develop subjects and match professional Medical Ambassadors for trips in the coming year. My professional career began with 21 years as a Pediatric Intensive Care Nurse. I then moved into management roles directing various departments. My final contribution in the professional world was as a Project Manager implementing a program which invited patients and families to be a part of improvement work. What a powerful addition patients, family, and caregivers are to the healthcare think tank! Now as a newly retired RN it is an honor to serve with the PCP team. I have always had a heart for the African people and it is a joy to see them advance their medical and administrative practices as we journey together.”
The role of President is a volunteer position and was previously held by Dr. Eric Gunnoe, who founded the PCP Medical Ambassador Program in 2011 along with Mary Stockmeyer. Eric will be staying on the MST and we are so thankful for his vision, leadership, and service! Thank you, Eric!
Please join us in congratulating Ann in her new role!

Rehabilitating the Karawa Nursing Dorm
Ann is also passionate about supporting nursing students in DR Congo. Last summer, she expressed a desire to raise support to rehabilitate the Karawa Nursing Dorm. Built in 1962, it has withstood monsoons and wars, but is in such poor shape that it is now uninhabitable. Without a safe and healthy place for nursing students to live during the school year, many have to decide if they should stay in these conditions or return home, giving up the possibility of becoming a nurse. In order to rehabilitate the roof, repair the bathrooms and showers, and install solar power, it will cost $25,000. Part of Ann's vision to raise awareness and support for the dorm is to connect with nursing students in Washington. This has provided an opportunity for Ann to share the difficulties nursing students in Congo face on a daily basis, and how they (US nursing students) can come alongside their peers.
To date, Ann has raised $14,020.75! If you would like to support the rehabilitation of the Karawa Nursing Dorm, click here to learn more.

Marta Returns to Congo
Our good friend and colleague, Marta Klein, PA, returned to Karawa as an ECC missionary in March. After a year-long home assignment, she was able to raise 100% of her fundraising goal! Marta is partnering with PCP not only as a fellow PCP Medical Ambassador, but she will be working with PCP on village-based nutrition education and hospital based training programs. We are excited for this strategic partnership!

Wasolo Training Update
Implementation and tracking outcomes is part of the overall strategy for improving health at the village level. In Wasolo, the baby girl (above) was delivered by caesarian. Nurses provided the new chlorhexidine gel treatment as trained. Mother and child are both doing well! Read the original story here.
