Bed nets for children. Throughout the program year 2009-2010, Covenant World Relief and the ECC Dept. of Christian Formation, in cooperation with the Paul Carlson Partnership, are co-sponsoring a drive for funds to buy specially treated bed nets to protect children from malaria-infected mosquitoes. Malaria is the greatet cause of death of Congolese children under the age of five. By preventing mosquito bites while children sleep, treated bed nets reduce the risk of malaria. Although UNICEF and other groups have been working hard to make nets available to families, still only a small percentage of children in Congo sleep under treated nets. Children throughout the ECC are being invited to give for this purpose during 2009-2010, and we invite other interested donors to join them. Just designate "bed nets" on your gift. Malnutrition in children. We are also giving increased attention to the nutritional needs of children. Over the past several years hwe have provided support to child nutrition centers at the CEUM hospitals, where children who are being treated at the hospitals and are found to be malnourished are fed specially nutritious food.
Yet childhood nutrition remains a serious concern. Malnutrition is the third highest cause of death among children in the Congo, and it is a contributing factor to other illnesses. A study done by Nyenemo Sanguma during his internship with the Paul Carlson Partnership in the summer of 2009 documents the problem and surveys possible steps that could help. As a part of that project, Nyenemo designed a holistic approach to treating children and educating parents at
the same time. We are now raising money to establish a pilot project, with a view towards learning from our experience and winning funding to expand to more locations.
Other special needs. In addition to these projects, the PCP responds to other special medical needs as they arise. For example, we have provided special medical equipment needed in the hospitals. Over time we have provided portable and fixed X-ray machines, incubators, autoclaves (sterilizers), and other items. Even laundry equipment is important.
