Health care was our first concern, the reason the organization was founded over 40 years ago, and it remains a firm commitment. Our primary partner in Congo, the CEUM (the Covenant Church of Congo), operates four hospitals in the Ubangi-Mongala region: at Karawa (the largest hospital and the location of the nursing school), Loko, Wasolo, and Bokada. A fifth hospital is being built by the CEUM at Bogose Nubea with the help of the World Health Organization and other partners. Each hospital serves a health zone, according to the system designed by the Congolese government. Spread throughout these health zones, the CEUM has a network of 93 clinics.
While we have always assisted the CEUM medical system, the needs have been particularly great since the most recent civil war ended in 2003. Our commitment to health care in the area is currently carried out through an annual operating subsidy for the entire system; the Clinics First project, which is placing basic diagnostic equipment in every one of the 93 CEUM clinics; assistance in the fight against HIV/AIDS; and support for other special health projects.
