In the CEUM medical network, 339 children died from malnutrition in the year 2008. In the words of the director of the medical system, Dr. Aimé Nkakala, "This is a big number, and it is very sad for our country."

Malnutrition is one of the leading causes of death in Congolese children under five. It likely contributes to other causes as well, such as malaria and respiratory infections. The PCP is looking for good solutions to the problem.

Nyenemo Sanguma, our summer intern, is researching nutritional issues in Congo and how they can be addressed effectively. Our goal is to reduce the numbers of children dying in the area where we work. As a Congolese himself, Nyenemo brings an important perspective to our Western ways of understanding African problems.

He has asked us to open the discussion to all who are interested. Here are his questions:

1. How can we address malnutrition in Central Africa?

2. What are some nutritious aliments that can be introduced in Central Africa?

3.How are people addressing malnutrition in tropical countries?

Anyone with information or ideas to share on these questions is invited to email Nyenemo Sanguma.
